What are the Germans doing here?
The next morning after my father returned from the war, Uncle Battista and his son Ludovico spotted four German soldiers near the little chapel of St. Anthony, on the outskirts of town, below the washbasin. Two of them, manning a light infantry cannon pointing at San Panfilo, blocked its entrance. The others, armed with submachine guns, stood nearby, ready to fire. Uncle Battista stopped and turned around. Soon another hundred or so troops advanced from behind the water tower, riding on trucks and sidewinders. The original four soldiers remained positioned at the entrance until the entire contingent entered and occupied the town.
